Women Lead Nepal

Women Lead Nepal

Women Lead Nepal (WLN) is a youth-driven nonprofit organization with a mission to provide young women in Nepal with the skills, support, and opportunities they need to become leaders and changemakers. WLN was one of the first Nepali organizations launched to focus on adolescent leadership development, and the organization has implemented several peer education programs to empower girls with the skills and knowledge required to succeed. Many of the program’s previous participants are active members of WLN’s alumni community, creating a strong network of support for girls and women at various stages of their educational and leadership journeys.

WLN’s flagship initiative, The School Leadership Program, is a four-month curriculum  for adolescent girls between the ages of 16 and 18. The program reaches girls at a critical time in their education journeys, supporting them to smoothly transition from secondary school to higher education. In small groups, girls participate in a total of 80 hours of leadership training on topics such as civic engagement, bullying prevention, reproductive health, and gender-based violence. Students then lead and conduct sessions themselves, teaching younger students at local schools throughout the Kathmandu Valley. Each peer educator teaches a total of 10 sessions.

With support from the Girls Opportunity Alliance, Women Lead Nepal will support an additional 400 girls through its School Leadership Program. The organization will provide girls with a platform to practice important skills such as public speaking, critical thinking, and persuasion. In turn, girls will gain confidence in themselves and their ability to lead, encouraging them to pursue paths they may not have previously envisioned for themselves.

The School Leadership program has previously shown remarkable outcomes. Many of the program’s participants have gone on to pursue careers in fields where Nepali women are traditionally underrepresented, including law, medicine, engineering, and local government. Through this initiative, the organization hopes to develop the future generation of Nepali women leaders, contributing to social progress and equitable changes within Nepalese society.
