Sheevolution Africa Initiative (Sheevolution) is a nonprofit organization which focuses on leadership development for girls from disadvantaged communities in Nigeria. It supports girls between the ages of 11 and 19 through mentorship, life skills training, mental health and wellness counseling, and more. The organization’s mission is to democratize opportunities for girls, which includes access to technology, quality education, and among others. Sheevolution aims to promote gender equality, inclusive economic participation, and learning and development. To-date, the organization has supported more than 1,000 girls in secondary schools across Lagos, Nigeria.
Girls in Nigeria face many systemic barriers which prevent them from reaching their full potential. Social and cultural norms often marginalize girls, limiting their personal, educational, and professional development. Child marriage is a persistent problem, revealing deep gendered inequalities. Girls Not Brides reports that approximately 30 percent of girls in Nigeria are married before the age of 18, in contrast to 1.6 percent of boys. In total, UNICEF estimates that more than 22 million child brides live in Nigeria. Sheevolution is committed to changing these realities and unlocking a brighter future for girls.
The Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund will support Sheevolution’s Summer Growth Camp which is designed to empower adolescent girls to realize their full potential as leaders and learners. The project will be implemented in the Yaba Education District IV in Lagos and will provide girls a multi-faceted learning experience, including training on digital literacy, public speaking, and financial skills. Girls will also have the opportunity to participate in field trips to art centers and industries, exposing them to potential career paths and professional opportunities.
Sheevolution will directly support 250 girls through the Summer Growth Camp. The organization hopes that the skills girls learn—such as communication, critical thinking, and life planning—will enable them to disrupt the cycle of poverty, teenage pregnancies, and early marriages that has impacted too many girls. Sheevolution believes in and envisions a future in which Nigerian girls are shaping and leading their communities and country.
