Girls Like Me Project

Girls Like Me Project

As a trusted community-based organization, Girls Like Me Project (GLMP) helps Black adolescent girls critically examine social, cultural, and political ideologies in media to help them recognize and overcome stigma and negative stereotypes. GLMP aims to equip girls with the tools and strategies needed to become influential, independent digital storytellers who transform their communities and foster global sisterhood.

GLMP recognizes how out-of-school time leaves girls vulnerable to interruptions in learning, as well as other risk factors such as violence, negative influences, and idle time. In response, GLMP provides free after-school programming focused on storytelling, social and emotional learning, cultural enrichment, and paid youth job opportunities. Alongside its signature programs, GLMP created the H.O.T. (Healing Opportunities to Thrive) Girls Resource Bashes and Chicago Day of the Girl. In collaboration with community partners, H.O.T. Girls Resource Bashes create safe spaces that connect adolescent girls with resources and opportunities to support personal development, wellness, and empowered storytelling through the lens of Black girls. In order to connect Chicago’s inner-city girls to their global community, GLMP established Chicago Day of the Girl, an annual summit that occurs on October 11 in observance of the United Nations declaration of International Day of the Girl. The Chicago Day of the Girl is a free event that features an all-girl produced talk show, film screenings, productions created by girls, cultural enrichment activities, community-resource sharing, and more.

The Girls Opportunity Alliance Fund will support Girls Like Me Project’s six collaborative H.O.T. Girls Resources Bashes, including the 12th annual Chicago Day of the Girl event. The program will expand the H.O.T. Girls Resource Bashes to multiple locations throughout Chicago, including South Shore, Bronzeville, Washington Park, Englewood, and Chatham. Collectively, the H.O.T Girls Resource Bashes and Chicago Day of the Girl event will reach more than 600 girls.
